The Black Women's Guide to What's Hot Now!

Eye Contact

Inspired by the carefree seventies, when icy, colorful eyes ruled, today's take is playful yet totally refined. Here eyes are cast in psychedelic green and gold from lid to brow, complete with lush teal blue rimming the lower lids.

TO TRY: MAC Paint Pot cream shadow in Deleft ($16), MAC Eye Shadow in Chrome Yellow ($14) and MAC Eye Kohl in Blooz ($14, all maccosmetics.com).

SIMPLE CHIC

The nineties gave us glamour that was both powerful and feminine as makeup moved into neutral territory. Here eyes are a study of powdery nudes and woodsy browns that reign from lid to crease and beneath lower lashes. A pale sand is swept under a well-defined brow.

TO TRY: (1) Revlon Molten Metal Liquid Shadow in Bronze Bomber ($13, mass market retailers nationwide). (2) Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara in Black ($20, bobbibrowncosmetics.com). (3) Giorgio Armani Smooth Silk Eye Pencil ($24, giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com).

Allover nudes are simply chic, while pretty pales offer a perfectly polished finish.

RETRO COOL

The sixties brought us makeup as graphic as pop art. Eyes made a statement in opaque black and white, and sweeping bold lashes took the look from day to night. Now this effect gets an update with subtle sheers, icy lids and wispy lashes.

TO TRY: (1) Revlon Fantasy Lengths Maximum Wear Glue-On Eyelashes in Flirty ($6, mass market retailers nationwide). (2) Clé de Peau Beauté Eye Color Quad in Silent Movie Black & White ($70, select Saks Fifth Avenue stores nationwide).

IN LINE

The cat eye, a beauty trend popularized by Eartha Kitt in the fifties, is modernized when paired with a clean, nude lid. Eyes are swept corner to corner with a neat black liner using a slender brush.
TO TRY: (1) Shiseido The Makeup Accentuating Cream Eyeliner in Black ($25, fine department stores nationwide). (2) L'Oréal Paris HIP High Intensity Pigments Color Rich Cream Crayon ($10, mass market retailers). (3) Lancôme Cils Design Pro Mascara ($35, lancome-usa.com).

Eye-Q From lined and ultrasexy to smoky film noir lids, glamour comes in many forms.

BROWN BEAUTY

In the eighties, bold was beautiful and eye makeup was as over-the-top as big hair and gold lamé gowns. Today the luxe look is all about layering textures and metallic hues for a burnished finish. Here eyes are fully rimmed in black eyeliner, while creamy shadows worked from lid to crease set them off.

TO TRY:

(1) Maybelline New York Shadow Stylist in Sultry Black ($7, mass market retailers nationwide).

(2) Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Secret Service ($16, Sephora stores nationwide).

Plum and bronze are two shades that look good on just about everybody. Experiment with those two and you are bound to find one that works. Greens/blues always stand out but you have to be careful to look glam and not clown, so that takes some trial and error to get right! My tip is to let liquid liner be my bold color, with safer shades for the lids. Works every time!

I have a hard time finding the right colors to wear for my eyeshadow. I've tried matching with my clothing but certain colors just don't make my eyes stand-out. Does anyone have any suggestions?
