Grow Baby Grow: Five Hair Myths Set Straight

Five Myths That Stand Between You & Gorgeous Hair

Truth be told, some of that old-school hair advice you've heard from friends and relatives could be, well, just plain incorrect. Here's a professional reality check from leading stylists. Heeding their advice could make the difference between tired-looking tresses and fabulous, healthy hair.

1. Oiling Your Scalp Is An Absolute Necessity

Your scalp needs to breathe to function properly, so it's best not to clog hair follicles with heavy ingredients like petroleum jelly, mineral oil or lanolin. A dry or flaky scalp could be the result of using the wrong products. For example, shampoo with high alcohol content might dry out the scalp, or a too-heavy conditioner may leave a flaky residue. The last thing you want to do is put grease on top of flaky dead skin.

Black processed hair is fragile/delicate and should be treated as such. Many people have different advice for how to grow hair. Within the last 5 years I have paid more attention to my hair. I had to learn to believe that my hair deserves me taking time and making time to grow healthy hair. I do not buy "cheap" hair products, I wash my hair once a week, trim my ends every 6 - 8 weeks and relax my hair every 8 - 10 weeks without overprocessing it (do not leave the relaxer in too long). The result of healthy hair is not bone straight. I oil or moisturize my hair at least once every 2 weeks. As a result, my hair has doubled in length - before I began treating my hair better, I could never get the length of my hair to grow past my shoulders - especially without breakage. Now - my hair is long and healthy. I love my long hair length.

I think the problem is african-american women are afraid to cut their hair. My hair grows like a california wildfire and I cut and trim it at least every touch-up. While I\'m in the salon, women are always asking how do you get such healthy hair and you are cutting your hair everytime I see you. I tell them live stress free, cut your hair, and condition it. Not every product is for everyone. You must find a product that suits you. I use Neutrogena Medicated shampoo top control my dandruff. Salerm Wheat Germ Conditioner and leave it in for 10 minutes under heat for deep conditioning treatment. For leave-in I use a dominican conditioner called vellutonero finishing cream. These products leave my hair shiny w/o oils and sprays. Light and very bouncy. My hair is fabulous all day every day.

i am a hair dresser . and i find that when relaxing hair it is important not to only neutralize the hair but stabalizing and locking those bonds in with a ph balance shampoo. and of course condition. most people neutralize and condition. it makes a differance in the hair.

Ok fine. This is an article about growing black hair. However, something is not quite right here. If its about black healthy growing hair why are the models all wearing either weaves, extentions or wigs?. It just does not add up. Can you not show models with REAL healthy hair whether natural or straightened?

I don't reaally agree with t a quater of an inch every 6 to 8 weeks and this is another reason why our hair don't grow. If we are even lucky to grow a half an inch of hair a month and we cut a quater how i it going to grow. Although it i important to trim I think you shoud trim every 3 to 4 month based on how your hair looks (the end)
