Ask Mo'Nique: You Asked, Mo'Nique Answered!
When we told you we were catching up with Mo'Nique to dish on everything from her hosting the BET Awards to wrapping up an exciting season of VH-1'sFlavor of Love Girls: Charm School, your inquiring minds wanted to know a few more things from the Queen of Comedy herself.
See if she answered one of yours:
What is the name of your clothing line and where can I find it?
The clothing line will be called Mo’Nique. Unfortunately, I have not launched it yet so I don’t know where you can find it. But be patient with me because it’s coming. I just can’t say when—especially because I’ve said it so many times and it didn’t happen—so now I’ll simply ask everyone to keep a look out for it.
In the July 2006 ESSENCE cover story you stated that you and your husband had an “open” marriage. Does that mean that you approve of infidelity?
Neither my husband nor I would ever cheat on one another. To do that you would have to lie, sneak around and do all these crazy things because you don’t want your husband or partner to know what you’re doing. My husband is my very best friend in the world, therefore we have no secrets. When I made that statement people automatically equated “openness” with sex. If my husband said to me I went and had a drink with a woman, I wouldn’t be losing my mind over that. Life is much too short for that. What I’ve learned is that people can be married to one another and still be absolute strangers. Of course, they go to bed with each other every night, but they could not tell you who their significant person truly is. I don’t want to go down that road ever again because I’ve been there twice. So I made a promise that this time the man that I married was going to be my very best friend and he has been.
Do you think that Charm School exploits the women rather than helps them?
In no way do I feel that Charm School exploits those women. However, I do believe the show exposed them. Those women behaved on television the way they wanted to behave. Their behavior and attitudes were not rehearsed or produced. What people don’t know is that I talked to the producers and made sure they didn’t do certain things. I stressed to them: “We can expose, but not exploit.”
During one of the previous BET Awards you presented an award with Rihanna, who at the time was accused by the media of having a relationship with Jay-Z. I remember you stopping in the middle of your presentation to pay Beyoncé several compliments while Rihanna stood there looking very awkward and uncomfortable. Was that intentional?
(Sigh) I’m 40 years old so I don’t have time for that B.S.! I’m proud of Beyoncé and I dig that sister so I complimented her. There was no hidden agenda behind my comments. I don’t have time to get caught up in those kind of silly rumors. I think it’s amazing when people don’t have goodness and happiness in their life they make up such nonsense. The reason Rihanna looked 'awkward and uncomfortable' is because she was nervous. Before we went out on that stage she said to me, "Mo’Nique, I’m nervous. I’ve never done this before" and I simply assured her everything would be all right. So, please tell these folks to get a life!
