Groove Theory: Lowdown on New Music From Joe, Chico DeBarge and Coko
Joe's Inspired "Signature"
Not every R&B male artist speaks the same love language as his female loyalists, but somehow Joe Thomas does and has his lyrical prowess to thank for that. "All the records I wrote and produced were successful. I didn't' write much of the last two albums. I feel more comfortable writing and singing my own music because I can feel the vibe. After I left Jive it lit the flame for me to start taking control again." The result is "Signature," a nonstop love fest that's sure to get anyone in the mood from the tantalizing "Majic" and "Sexy Girl" to the uninhibited "Friends Don't Let Friends" and "Love's Best Episode," which boasts unadulterated prose like: "it's your world premiere tonight/I can't wait to see you/it's double exposure under candlelight tonight /wear something see-through/ see girl what we did last night was just the preview/ this it the love scene part the sequel/get ready..." Sounds like a great private party for two until he suggests: "let's make a DVD." Screeeeeeech! (Real Talk Sidebar: Say what?! Now, Joe. Do we need to remind you of a couple of those caught on tape: Ray J and Kim K; R Kelly and a teen...? Not a good look, we ladies simply can't go out like that in this digital age by helping "Cheaters" scandalous ratings. That's messy like Jesse.)
Besides ambiance Joe says that the album was therapeutic and helped him through a tough breakup. "I had never experienced heartbreak like that before until this relationship I realized how closed up I had been with my feelings." Whomever his former object of desire is, we're not mad at the material she inspired.
