Fewer Highly Educated Black Women Opting for Family
A new study to be presented by a Yale Sociology professor at the American Sociological Association annual meeting finds what Black women have known for a years—fewer Black women with postgraduate degrees are getting married and having children, according to the LA Times.
In the last 40 years, Black women have made strides in attaining higher levels of education, but it appears to have been at the cost of having a family. According to the study, highly educated Black women born after 1950 are twice as likely as White women to never be married by age 45 and twice as likely to be divorced, widowed or separated. The study also found that Black women are less likely to marry outside of the race, less likely to marry a college-educated spouse and more likely to be childless if born between 1955 and 1960.—WLW
