The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on Friday sued mortgage and banking units of Wells Fargo & Co. and HSBC Holdings Plc, accusing them of charging excessive rates to Blacks who took out subprime mortgages. The Los Angeles NAACP chapter received several complaints from those who felt they were subjected to more strenuous loan terms than White borrowers, according to Newsday.com. The lawsuit claims that African-Americans are more likely to be steered towards taking subprime loans, especially if their credit scores, income and down payment aren't equal to White home buyers. The 100-year-old civil rights group is seeking banking reforms, educational outreach and further internal staff training.—WLW
