In Her Honor

September 4, 2009: The memorial services and reflections have started for slain Spelman student, Jasmine Lynn who was shot and killed on the Clark-Atlanta campus yesterday.

Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows confirmed that Lynn's friend heard the gunshots, saw the weapon and told her to get down on the ground. But she was shot in the chest and died at the scene, according to Kansascity.com.

Dozens of her family members including her mother Constance Franklin and friends gathered for a vigil in Lynn's hometown, Kansas City, Missouri to remember their bright shining star who was the first in her family to go to college. Her friends at school are also feeling the pain of her passing.

"She had a wonderful personality!," said Brandon Frame, a Morehouse College student who graduated earlier this year and knew Lynn personally. "I met her when she ran for Ms. Mays Hall at Morehouse College, when I was an RA and she had all these great goals. She was very intelligent. She definitely was aspiring to do great things but now the world will never know a person who was so beautiful in so many aspects of life."

Ricarah Little, a fellow Spelman student who was to graduate with Lynn in 2012, had the same pyschology class as her. She will forever remember Lynn's good nature.

"She was such a friendly person- smiling, joking, popular, and laughing. I mean no matter what she said it made me laugh," said Little. "The school was pretty hurt by this yesterday. Dr. Tatum [President of Spelman Collge] and the Spelman College staff held a prayer for her and we all sang the Spelman hymn in honor of her."

Police are still investigating the case. So far, no one has been arrested.--Reporting by Jennifer "Jaki" Johnson

Student at Clark Atlanta Doesn't Feel Safe

September 3, 2009: In an exclusive interview with ESSENCE.com, a freshman on the Clark-Atlanta campus has said that  students are buzzing about this morning's shooting on campus, but many aren't surprised by what happened.

"This is an educational facility," said the student who chose to remain anonymous. "People don't come here to get shot. I love this school, but I can't say that I feel exactly safe here."

Rumor on campus is that 18-year old Jasmine Lynn, a student who attended nearby Spelman College, was walking with her boyfriend at 12:30 a.m. near one of the dorms at Clark Atlanta when she was shot in the chest by a stray bullet from a nearby altercation.

Students at Spelman have organized a memorial in Lynn's honor this evening at the school's main gate on Westview Drive.

Detectives working on the case are said to still be working on a description of the shooter and questioning witnesses.

Lynn was majoring in psychology and minoring in business.

"I completely blame the school for this," said the Clark-Atlanta freshman who just arrived on campus two weeks ago. "As far as security goes, you don't really have to check in with anyone to get on campus. There isn't a gate or check point like at Spelman and Morehouse." --WLW

September 3, 2009 - Just as students are returning back to school, Atlanta police are investigating the shooting of a Spelman College student, who was killed on the Clark-Atlanta University campus early Thursday morning, according to CBSAtlanta.com.

A fight ensued on the campus and Jasmine Lynn, a 19-year-old sophomore from Kansas City, Missouri. was killed. Another student was shot in the wrist and wounded as well. He was released from Grady Memorial Hospital but his identity has not been made public. Neither Jasmine nor the unidentified shooting victims were involved in the altercation. They were both just walking with friends when they were hit by the stray bullets.

Clark-Atlanta sent out a statement to students saying that an arrest had been made, but then later recanted, saying no one had been apprehended. The university is offering counseling to any student or employee who may have difficulty processing the sudden death.--WLW

This is really senseless for a young person with so much hope in her future seeking to obtain higher education to die on the school grounds. For anyone to question what she was doing out at 12:30am is just stupid. She was a college student, but the security issue as reported by actual students, needs to be looked into. I can't blame the school, but lax security doesn't help. If it happened inside the school, the school may have been at fault. Nevertheless, my prayers go out to this young woman's family. I hope her killer is swiftly caught.

Isn't it typical for a college student to be out late sometimes? She we be focusing on that?

@ Kitten. It said 12:30 a.m. And even if it were 12:30 p.m., she could have easily been on her way to class, since she was shot on Clark Atlanta's campus. (Students in the Atlanta University Center can cross-register for classes at the other campuses.) And before someone says why was she out that late, the students in the AUC usually hang out near "the strip" on CAU's campus during those hours. My prayers are with my Spelman sister's family and the entire AUC.
