Suicide Study: A Look At Why Black Men Are Opting Out of Life

Abraham Biggs, the 19-year old Florida man who committed suicide last week and streamed it live online, was just the latest in what seems to be a surge of young brothers who are opting out of life. Newsweek.com spoke to Dr. Sean Joe, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Michigan who studies suicide and the behavior associated with it. The American Association of Suicidology found that the rate of suicide among Black men ages 15-24 rose 83 percent in the last 20 years and is the third leading cause of death for younger Black men. Joe believes the Black community's apprehension to reach out for mental health care and black masculinity in general are to blame.
