Today in History: Black Female Inventor
On July 17, 1888, Miriam Benjamin became only the second Black woman to receive a patent. Benjamin called her invention a "Gong and Signal Chair." The idea was to press a button that would alert the waiters' station in a hotel exactly what room wanted service. Her creation was adapted and eventually used in the United States House of Representatives.
We celebrate Miriam Benjamin, a sister whose invention has made many people's lives just alittle bit easier.-SG
